How many of us get up and before doing anything else, checks our social media page? How many likes we had on Facebook? Or how our last tweet is performing? Or do we check Instagram or some other platform? Are we becoming social media psychos? Have we developed an insatiable need to be liked, followed, retweeted, flicked, poked, or whatever other form of social media acknowledgement exists?
Is this type of behaviour the accepted norm? If it is, have we gotten caught up in the social media hype, changing our profiles two or three times a week, taking another photograph to uploaded to Instagram or Facebook, posting another dinner or exercise or some other random picture that many people are too kind to tell us that they really are not interested in seeing. We have morphed into a society who would rather video a horrific incident, to post, rather than put down our devices and help the person or persons in distress. This behaviour is bordering on us being sociopaths and that should be a disconcerting thought. Have we become lovers of ourselves and of pleasure more than lovers of God? Isn't this a warning given by the Apostle Paul in his second epistle to Timothy? Most of us are social media users and some even earn a living using the various platforms, however, it is imperative that we check our behaviour and the appetite we have developed for social media. Everything in moderation is acceptable. However, when we place things or people above God in our lives, we have created idols, which leads to idolatry. This is an unacceptable act to God, a sinful one which he hates. All things must be done decently and in order, even our use of social media should take its proper place and in proper proportion.
